Enhanced Reports — September 2000
Late report 10/18/00: On 9/27/00 a 35 ton Lorain crane tipped over at the Dakota Gasification Plant at Beulah, North Dakota.
The operator was driving with a piece of fiberglass ductwork hanging from the hook. No outriggers were out and about 40 feet of boom was extended. The load was not tied off to keep from swinging around. The operator came to a small side slope and continued on. The ductwork swung to the low side and took the crane over. No one was hurt, just a little shook up. The funny thing about it, the company requires a license to operate a forklift, but not to operate a crane |
9/23/00: A Manitowoc 888 owned by Bragg Crane & Rigging was involved in an accident on Thursday. The crane operator had just released the load after people told him that a chord on the luffer was bent and the crane was making strange noises. The operator was booming down
to check the boom when the boom failed and came crashing down. One part of the boom crashed landed on a 5 story building
that was under construction, the other parts landed on the ground taking out whatever was in its path. The area was clear of people except for the operator because they knew there
was a problem. No one was hurt in this accident.

9/22/00: Punta Gorda, Florida — Another crane boom touches power line. This is the 17th power line accident report we've received this year.
Electric power to 1,777 Punta Gorda residents
was knocked out Thursday morning after a crane on a barge in a Punta Gorda Isles canal struck a power line.
The boom of the crane knocked down a "feeder" line that supplies power to the downtown area, according to officials at Florida Power and Light. No injuries were reported. |
9/20/00: T250 P&H tipped over in Australia.
The main thing is no one was hurt, but it's the same old story about operators that cannot read load charts correctly. He had 31 metres of hydraulic boom out with his fly jib also attached and he was working at a radius of 14 metres on his main boom lifting a weight of 3,200kgs and after all the required deductions he was rated at 1,400kgs.

9/14/00: A crane boom fell on 9/12/00 at the Gavin Power House project in Cheshire, Ohio. Rumor has it that “the boom hoist let go” which the pictures also seem to indicate.
It is also reported the crane is a Lampson Crane. There were no injuries.

 9/13/00: Newport News, Virginia —
Another avoidable power line accident caused the death of a cable installer. | Cache Copy |
Dead Cable Installer A Newport News Man
A cable installer who was electrocuted when he touched a high-voltage line in Fairfax County Monday morning was identified yesterday as Ricky R. Hughes, 42, of Newport News.
Police said Hughes was installing cable television lines as a subcontractor for Cox Cable. About 10:30 a.m., Hughes was standing in the bucket of a cherry picker in the 1300 block of Beulah Road, just off Route 7, when he came in contact with a 19,500-volt line. The shock killed Hughes instantly, police said.
Police said they did not know yesterday whether Hughes or the bucket touched the line.
This is the 16th power line accident report we've received this year. |
9/08/00: North Carolina — On Friday, August 7, 2000, Boom Touches A Power Line, Killing Worker — Shock Knocks Man Off Truck
This is the 15th power line accident report we've received this year. A piece of machinery touched a power line Friday morning, electrocuting a 27-year-old construction worker from Monroe, North Carolina, said York County Coroner Doug McKown. A York County Sheriff's Office report identified the dead man as Keith William Bessent Jr. He was part of a crew working on a Seaside Drive home in York when the accident happened at 8:30 a.m., the report said. |
9/2/00: On Tuesday, August 29, 2000, a 65 ton crane toppled onto its side at Lyons county court house construction project in Emporia, Kansas. Martin K. Eby Construction Co., Inc. is the contractor.
There were no injuries. Speculation is that the crane was sitting on soft soil and when the operator extended the telescopic boom out too far the crane toppled onto its side. |
